Obviously you will be saving money in shop rent and employees but you still need some money to start up. Catalogs cost money to print, if you are using them. You can make budget catalogs with a photocopier in your local newsagent or you can make big glossy ones. It depends on what your product is and what your budget is. If you are planning to sell items, you need to source and buy them. Once the money starts coming in, then it is time to upgrade, but not before then.
It is also a good idea usually to stick to one line or one type of product and it is probably more fun for you to sell something you are knowledgeable about. If you are mad about clothing, a fashion catalog might be good. You will have stiff competition but if you can offer something a little different to the others, it might be worth a go.
It is a good idea to research what similar products sell for so as not to overprice your goods. Your products should seem fairly priced and good quality. You should be easy to contact in case someone has a question and you must be polite and professional in all communications, even if you think the customer is wrong. Setting up a mail order business is far from easy but you can potentially earn great money from it.
